On Thursday October 3, Adam Harper decided to stop drinking coffee. Adam is a MBA student at Harvard University. He studies long hours, gets very little sleep, so he drinks a lot of coffee—anywhere from five to six cups a day. Recently, Adam felt that drinking thus much coffee was making it hard for him to sleep at all. He also began having problems with his concentration(注意力), and complained of stomachaches. Adam’s doctor made this suggestions: stop drinking coffee altogether.
When Adam got up on October 3, he began his day without his morning coffee. By 11:00 a.m., Adam was in a terrible mood. He was tired and had a headache. At 11:30, he had a meeting with his student advisor. In the meeting, he found it almost impossible to continue. What was going on?
Caffeine, a chemical found in coffee, was most likely the reason for how Adam felt. Caffeine is a stimulant that boosts(增加) energy levels and improves concentration- but only for a short time. Lowering caffeine consumption(减少摄取咖啡因) often makes a drop in blood pressure and the result is a “coffee headache”. People who stop drinking coffee often say they feel tired and moody, and find it hard to focus.
5
The good news is that these feeling usually pass after four and five days. During this time, doctors suggested taking some aspirin for the headache. So, if Adam can wait, in less than a week, he may be feeling much better. 46. We learn from the reading Adam .
A. does researches on caffeine B. can never be feeling better
C. still drinks 5 to 6 cups of coffee a day D. had some problems because of coffee
47. How may people feel when they stop drinking coffee?

In our daily life, we always come to the question “What is the real beauty” Different people have different ideas. Last night, I read a true story from the newspaper. It’s about a poor, ordinary looking old woman. She lived alone, making a living by picking things from rubbish heaps (垃圾堆). However, she took in more than ten homeless children and tried to bring them up .Every day she worked from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.. In order to earn as much money as possible to raise the children and to keep them in school, she even went to a local hospital to sell her blood(血) once a month. She got so weak because of the loss of blood that she sometimes felt sick on her way home. When asked why she chose to take care of so many children, she smiled and answered,“Oh, I love children and I like to live together with them because they always bring me great happiness.” Though the old woman was poor, she was full of love and rich in spirit. So the local government and people in her city truly respected her. Maybe you can’t help thinking,“What makes that poor woman so different?” It is nothing else but her inner (内部的) beauty, her true devotion of love without any

Our children and grandchildren may not have a chance to visit many of the most famous places around the world. War, weather, age, traffic and pollution damage (破坏) these famous places. If we do nothing, they may even no longer remain. But looking after these places often costs more than one country can afford.
In the early 1970s, world governments decided that if they joined together, they would be able to preserve (保护) our history. If every country paid some money, they said, it would be possible to look after important historic places. For this reason, countries around the world united to form the World Heritage Organization in 1972. Today, the organization helps to protect and rebuild the most important places from our history.
However, one of the biggest problems for historic places is vandalism. That is to say, people sometimes enter these places and damage the buildings. At some places, such as
7
Stonehenge in England, governments have built high fences to protect it from vandals.
There are many different ideas about how to solve the problem of vandalism. Some professors say that if guards keep walking around these places, vandals won’t be able to get in. Some professors say that if they fix more television cameras, they won’t need so many guards. Others say that the best way is education. If people learn to respect history, they won’t damage it. They will also want to spend money looking after old places. For this reason, the World Heritage Organization helps to spread information about the value of historic places.

Family VS Friends
9
It is Saturday afternoon. You and your friends are planning to go to the movies and then have a dinner together. Just as you start to get ready, your dad reminds you that it is your aunt’s birthday and the whole family is going out to dinner to celebrate. How can this end without a quarrel?
The tension (紧张关系) between teenagers and their families mainly comes from how to balance what they want with family hopes. You once spent most of your free time with your parents. When you want to spend more and more time with your friends, your parents’ feelings may get hurt. They might feel that they are losing control of you during the period. You might feel angry that so many family requirements are placed on you. Here are a few things you can try to make it a little easier to ease(缓解) the tension between you and your family.
*Tell your plan to your parents first and ask your parents whether there is anything else planned at that time.
*When your buddy activities come with a family event, try to find out if there is any way you can do both. You can spend a little time with each group. You can go to the family even and ask to be with your friends next time. You can also invite your friends to the family event.
*Suggest something you would really like to do with your family. When your parents know you want to spend time with them, they will feel better.
Sometimes the results cannot always make both satisfied. However, the tension can be eases if you consider the feelings of your family as well as those of yourself and your friends.(选自《初中英语读本》九上 Chapter 7)
