1. Call some students to give a report on who they will send gifts to and what they will get them.
2. Ask the class a question.
T: Who will have birthday in our class? Ss: Betty.
T: What will you get for her? S1: What about a pen? S2: No, that’s too boring.
S3: Why don’t we get her a hair clip?
S4: No, that’s too personal. How about some flowers?
S5: No, that’s not creative enough. Why don’t we get her a dictionary?

Step II Function
Put some gifts on the table and say:
T: I received many gifts. Here are some of them. Which one do you like? S1: I like the pen. I think it’s useful.
S2: That’s not special enough. I like the watch. It’s lovely. S3: I like the photo frame. It’s beautiful.
T: Do you want to know which I like best? I like the picture best. It’s the best gift I have ever received. I got it on last Teachers’ day. One of my students gave it to me.
Meanwhile, write the key points (what, when and who) on the Bb, making a chart like this: Name Mr Liang Julie
T: What’s the best gift you have ever received? Julie, can you tell me? Julie: A watch is the best gift I have received. T: When did you get it? Julie: On my birthday. T: Which birthday? Julie: My 12th birthday. T: Who gave it to you? Julie: My uncle.
T: Thank you. Can you ask each other these questions? Then come to the Bb and make notes in the chart.

When they’ve finished, point to the chart and talk about it like this: T: What’s the best gift David has ever received? Ss: An edictionary. T: When did he get it?
Ss: When he entered the middle school. T: Who gave it to him? Ss: His aunt.

T: There is another information chart about gifts. You will talk about it as we did just now.
Ask a pair of Ss to read the sample conversation in 3a. Explain: A guy means a man. e.g. He is a great guy. What a funny guy!
A pet is a house-hold animal like a dog or a cat. e.g. pet dog; pet parrot; pet fish
T: Now work in pairs. Student A looks at this page, Student B looks at page 87. Exchange information and fill in the chart. Remember, you should use the sentence structures on the Bb when you exchange information with your partners. Correct the answers by calling several pairs to say their conversations.
Step IV Survey
T: Make a chart in your exercise book like the one on the Bb. Then ask three Ss around you and fill in the chart. Finally, give me a report like this: Show the following structures on the blackboard.

T: Now think of what you are going to do for someone’s birthday. Then tell the class and let the others guess who the person is by asking questions like: Is it someone in your family?
Is it your friend / father / mother / aunt / classmate?
T: Are you ready? Who’d like to come here? Hands up! Peter, you’re a brave boy. Come here.
Peter: I’m going to make a card. S1: Is it someone in your family? Peter: No, it isn’t!
S2: Is it someone in our school? Peter: Yes, it is. S3: Is it your classmate? Peter: No, it isn’t! S4: Is it our teacher? Peter: Yes, it is. S5: Is it Ms Wu? Peter: Yes, it is.

Help Ss understand gift culture in different countries and therefore learn how to send the right gift to the right person.
T: From the activity we know we give different gifts to different people. That’s to say, different people like different gifts. And giving gifts is also not the same in different countries. Now read the article on page 65.You will know more about it.
