Here's the #1 question I get from women readers: How can I have a successful

career and a happy family? Many of these readers already are successful in their careers. What they're really asking is how to also have a happy family. This is a very new question for us. For centuries, women's careers were our family. Our career was 'caregiver.' We lived to please our fathers, our husbands, received a lifetime guarantee of stability and security.

But today that bargain has vanished. We're still doing our part by serving our families. But for many if not most, marriage now is a source of deep insecurity.

our sons. In return for our service, we

Most young marriages now end in divorce

No one enters a marriage thinking,

'Someday we'll hate each other,' but that's been precisely the experience of most of China's born-post-1980 generation. The 2005, the divorce rate for this generation already had reached 57 percent. For the first time in Chinese history, a generation of children now is growing up in broken households. Women often suffer greatly during divorce, but at least we can take charge of our lives and move on. Our children, on the other hand, cannot. When divorce occurs, they're victims in the truest sense.

The impacts on children of divorce can last a lifetime. I happen to know this first-hand, since I was born in America in 1969, and it was in the 1970s that divorce now in China. My generation was the first to grow up as the children of divorce.

Ministry of Civil Affairs reports that by

first exploded in America as is happening

While my own parents stayed together, over the years I've seen the impact on my friends of their parents' divorces. Their own divorce rate is exceptionally high. Many have grown up afraid to love and fearful of life's possibilities.

Future generations can suffer such cascading impacts even when parents don't divorce but stay together in troubled marriages. Today, half of American young adults whose parents stayed together said they may have been better off if their parents actually had divorced! What a heartbreaking situation for parents and children alike.

Women bear most of the costs and risks of parenting

Compared with previous generations, today's husbands are doing much more of the housework and spending much more long way to go to achieve equality. Women still do most of the housework and childrearing. For most, motherhood

time with the kids. And yet we still have a

than one.

So, to women who want both a

successful career and a happy family: The only way to 'have it all' is not to try to do it all yourself.

Step #1 to achieving a happy family: Marry a man you love, who loves you,

who is committed to being your partner,

in all aspects of your lives.

Do not marry just to marry

This means that you'll need to push back against society's pressure to hurry up and marry just anyone. When you don't

have a boyfriend, they ask 'Why don't you

have a boyfriend?' When you have a boyfriend, they ask 'When are you getting

married?' When you do get married, it's 'When are you having babies?'

I've seen friends marry for the right reasons, and I've seen friends marry the nearest guy when their alarm clock goes married.

In this way, the leftover-woman stigma wreaks havoc with women's lives. It hurries us into marriage-for-the-sake-of-marriage. The inevitable result is a society full of loveless and our children into lives of financial, emotional and spiritual insecurity.

In defense of Chinese men

Recently I was on Beijing TV when a glamorous 40-something Chinese guy informed me that my views on family are unrealistic and un-Chinese. Because, he explained, 40-something Chinese guys only want 20-something women who will idolize them.

I disagree with his assessment. To the contrary, my conversations with Chinese men make me optimistic about the future for men and women in China.

While I've met only a small fraction of all the men in China, the men I've met are extraordinarily thoughtful and interesting, and searching for the same things women

are. As in: a good life and a wonderful

partner with whom to share that life. And children, who are happy and well-prepared for life.

Are there some Chinese men only interested in being the objects of women's worship? Sure. But if we as

women demand mutual respect and

partnership, those men eventually will have to come around or be left alone.

Be a headhunter

Most men are cautious about marriage. They're afraid of being trapped with the wrong partner. So today, we have a system where men do the choosing, and

women wait, hope, and sometimes,

scheme, to be chosen. But since women bear most of the risks of marriage and parenting, we need to be at least as cautious as men.

Become a headhunter for your Mr. Right.

Right。 Right。

executives for global companies. And the

funny thing is, being a headhunter taught me how to choose my Mr. Right! Many career women agonize over every career choice, and yet sail almost at random into boyfriend relationships. But that's an upside-down way to approach our lives. We're now living through massive economic change, and that means that over the years, we'll have good jobs and bad jobs, good bosses and horrible bosses, we will work for good companies and bad companies.

When it comes to our careers, as long as we're growing every day, we can turn any career mistake into a learning experience.

But marriage is a forever decision. The fact is, for most women today, the major potentially devastating mistake available to us the consequences of which can wreck our lives and the lives of our future children, is the choice of whom we marry. This is the most important decision of your life

This analogy is close to me because for seven years, I worked as a professional headhunter, finding CEOs and other top

So, relax about your career decisions, and focus on not bungling the big one. Now, not only can you choose your man, but you must.

Every headhunter knows that for any search to be successful, you need: lots of candidates!

So get out there, expand your social network, meet and make friends with lots of men, including those you think you'd never date. Because becoming friends with lots of interesting men, and women, is the best way to access the many candidates you need to successfully complete the most important search of your life.

Besides, headhunting is fun! Men and women think differently, and even just as

friends, men can bring us lots of fun and new perspectives. And befriending lots of men, most just as friends, some as lovers, helps hone our headhunting skills, helping us understand what we need from a life partner.

Marriage is life's most profound decision. Choose wisely. When you get this decision right, you'll be able to give your children the best possible gift: a family deserve that, you deserve that, and so does he.

that's warm, happy and secure. They

Overtime added by smartphones and tablets?

Owning a smartphone may not be as smart as you think.

They may let you surf the internet, listen to music and snap photos wherever you are...but they also turn you into a workaholic, it seems.

A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing, all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day.

Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they are able to respond to emails on their mobiles.

The study by technology retailer Pixmania, reveals the average UK working day is between nine and 10 hours, but a further two hours is spent responding to or sending work emails, or making work calls.

More than 90 percent of office workers have an email-enabled phone, with a third accessing them more than 20 times a day.

Almost one in ten admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails, and even those without a smartphone check emails on their home computer.

Some workers confess they are on call almost 24 hours a day, with nine out of ten saying they take work emails and calls outside their normal working hours.

Nearly two-thirds say they often check work emails just before they go to bed and as soon as they wake up, while over a third have replied to one in the middle of the night.

The average time for first checking emails is between 6am and 7am, with more than a third

checking their first email in this period, and a quarter checking them between 11pm and midnight.

Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said: „The ability to access literally millions of apps, keep in contact via social networks and take photos and video as well as text and call has made smartphones invaluable for many people.

„However, there are drawbacks. Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and smartphones mean that people literally cannot get away from work.

„The more constantly in contact we become, the more is expected of us in a work capacity.‟ “人们之间的联系越频繁,对我们的工作能力期待越高。”

Youth need sex education

When looking at the part-time jobs notices posted near the canteen of Beijing Union University, Kang Jia, 22, avoids being seen by others.

“Many of the ads are about abortions. It would be very embarrassing if somebody thought I was looking for an abortion,” she said.

According to the results of a recent survey by China‟s National Population and Family Planning Commission, more than 13 million abortions are conducted in China every year. More than 50 percent are for females under the age of 25.

“The majority of those who get abortions are college students,” said the commission‟s report.

An increasing number of young Chinese people are adopting a more casual attitude toward sexual relationships. But the absence of sex education on campus can lead to various problems among college students. Experts say it is vital to inform students about sex, not only for the sake of their personal health but also for the sake of the wider society.

According to Yang Xiong, a researcher at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, one reason for this trend is that China‟s economic development has led to a gradual easing of moral standards

in society.

“Another reason is that young Chinese people can now easily access information relating to sex on the Internet,” said Yang.

At the same time, the popularity of GPS-based mobile applications has made it very easy for young Chinese to meet up for casual sex, reported The Daily Beast, earlier this year.

Increasingly permissive attitudes toward sex in China have led to a record number of unwanted pregnancies in the country. Statistics show that increasing numbers of Chinese teenage girls are getting pregnant due to a lack of sex education, reported Shanghai Daily last year.

“We are usually busiest two to three months after the summer vacation and other festivals such as Valentine‟s Day,” Zhang Zhenrong, director of Shanghai‟s only hotline for pregnant girls, told the newspaper. “Sometimes we receive almost 1,000 phone calls a day from teenagers.”

According to Xia Xueluan, a sociologist at Peking University, a lack of sex education reaches beyond health issues, such as STDs and HIV, and causes social problems too.

“Sex education is supposed to teach students that sex is not entertainment or even a game, but more about responsibility and integrity, both socially and individually,” Xia said. “Wrong attitudes toward relationships cause high divorce rates, which also have a negative impact on society.”

According to Kang Jia, it has become common for college student couples to live together in a rented apartment.

“Some student couples live just like a husband and wife, especially juniors and seniors,” said Kang. “But usually those who live together have bad grades in school.”

Tablet market on fire

The past week was possibly the most eventful in the history of customer technology markets, or to be precise, the 7-inch (17.8-cm) tablet market. Never before have three of the biggest players in the industry scheduled what could be truly historic product launches so close together.

Not only did Apple officially join the blossoming market by releasing the iPad Mini on Oct 23, but Microsoft launched its Surface tablet on Oct 26, and Google, despite having to cancel events due to hurricane Sandy, annouced its latest Nexus 10 tablet in New York on Oct 29, only two months after the release of its Nexus 7.

Who do you think will top the small tablet market? Let‟s run a quick comparison to find out. Apple‟s iPad Mini 苹果iPad Mini

Despite its name, the 7.9-inch iPad Mini is one of the largest among the mini-tablets. It‟s got all the aesthetics of its original 9.7-inch counterpart and is incredibly thin–just 7.2 mm, 23 percent thinner than the iPad. But it falls short of other tablets due to its non-Retina 1024×768 display.

The iPad Mini comes in different models–16GB, 32GB, and 64GB–so onboard storage shouldn‟t be an issue. The base price, however, is significantly higher than the competition, and the

1024x768 display resolution pales in comparison to the Nook HD‟s 1440x900 or the 1280x800 of the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD.

Google has officially revealed the Samsung-made Nexus 10 tablet, and it seems like most of the rumors were true.

For starters, Google has confirmed that the Nexus 10 will be running Android 4.2 out of the box, so get excited. It will also come equipped with a 10-inch display running at an impressive 2560x1600 resolution. On the inside, it‟ll have a A15 dual-core processor running alongside 2GB of RAM, so expect the Nexus10 to be a speedy little tablet.

Surface is being launched alongside Windows 8, Microsoft‟s overdue operating system, which is being described as the biggest change in the history of Windows.

It is a bold product with some great touches, like the magnetic cover that turns into a keyboard, and a minimal, Apple-like design. It doesn‟t feature a camera and focuses on Office software, which suggests Microsoft is pitching this gadget as an executive toy. There‟s no 3G connection (only Wi-Fi) so owners won‟t have to worry about an extra contract.

The real delight, however, is Metro, the impressive navigation interface. It is beautifully designed with a zingy typography and brightly colored squares for navigation. Pre-orders for Surface in the US sold out over the weekend, so it would seem customers are excited.
